Restoring Our Constitution: Progressives should fight digression

This is basically a diary to recommend another diary.
If you are a progressive, and believe that our democratic experiment should be extending the benefits and protections to all people, expecially to the weak, then you should be concerned about the loss of the Great Writ by a group that is the least able to protect itself. This group of people, those detained as enemy combatants, were brought into our system totally against their will, and have absolutely no recourse to the rule of law that our nation claims it stands for.
An excellent diary by The Maven, Habeas and the MCA: Supreme Court Takes a Look is fast scrolling off of the Recent Diary List.
This issue is extremely important to progressives. We may be the next group to have their rights restrained. IMHO, it would be imprudent to wait for the Rescue Rangers to bring this excellent diary on the Writ to the community's attention.
I urge everyone to read this diary and become cognizant of this issue.
In the extreme event that the SCOTUS upholds the denial of Habeas Corpus to those detained in Gitmo, we will have to work hard to get legislation to restore it. We just cannot let the government continue to chip away at our ability to hold it accountable.
No matter what, we, as a community, need to be following this issue just as closely as we follow election 2008 and the GWOT. Having the ability to hold the executive branch accountable when it exercises its most potent power, the power to take your life away, is the single most important right we have. Do not take the threat lightly.
