I admit I haven't delved deep into the swamps, but as far as I can tell -- aside from general pissiness at the "weakness" of continuing to use our constitutional system when we all know it should have been disbanded in a fit of pique after 9/11 -- I gather the prime conservative fear over moving terrorists to America to stand trial is that as retaliation for holding those trials in America (that is, in New York), al Qaeda will be motivated to attack America (that is, New York).
Which is now bad again, apparently, though I keep forgetting which U.S. cities conservatives think it's ok for al Qaeda to attack and which ones aren't.
So what, I guess they apparently figure that al Qaeda's hiding in some cave somewhere, suddenly overjoyed at this news?
al-Bob: "Damn. The infidels have captured our brothers. They're going to be giving them trials in front of military commissions -- but at a military base in Cuba."
al-Timmy: "Rats! There seems nothing we can do about it -- it is a foolproof plan on their part. There is no way we can attack America if they are holding our comrades all the way down on a military base in Cuba. It would be far too complicated, nobody would understand our motivations. Why are you attacking America instead of Cuba, they would say? It would make no sense."
al-Bob: "I agree. We appear to be foiled. The great George Bush has schemed so that we can no longer attack America without looking foolish, since our brothers are being held not in America, but on a military base on the island of Cuba."
al-Ringo: "Wait, comrades! There is a change in the news! I have just heard that they will be giving them trials in New York City!"
al-Bob: "New York City? Ah... I am coming up with a plan. What if we -- and this sounds crazy -- attacked New York City?
al-Timmy: "I never thought of that before! What a brilliant strategy!"
al-Ringo: "Surely, they will never expect us to attack New York City! It would be inconceivable to them!"
al-Bob: "Yes! It is perfect. The stupid Americans have played right into our hands again. For many long years we could not attack America because people would not understand that it was because we were angry at America for capturing our brothers and imprisoning them on Cuba. But now we can be angry at America for imprisoning them in America! All the world will understand our complex emotional state! It will need slightly less explaining than before!"
al-everybody: "Huzzah!"
I think that about sums it up, but I honestly have no idea.
