Time To Say Goodnight and Farewell

Sun Jun 05, 2005 at 11:11:53 PM PDT

It's been nice. It's been interesting. It's been educational. It's been fun. It's been perplexing. It's been informative. It's been frustrating. It's been humbling. It's been inspiring. It's been sad. It's been home.

And now, it's time to say farewell.

Former Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Reads Daily Kos

Sun Jun 05, 2005 at 06:36:53 PM PDT

While sitting in the doctor's waiting room earlier this afternoon, I came upon this snippet in the June, 2005, edition of Saturday Night magazine. Saturday Night magazine is a companion rag to Canada's national, conservative leaning newspaper, The National Post.

Saddam Hussein Will Only Face 12 Charges

Sun Jun 05, 2005 at 10:49:52 AM PDT

The BBC is reporting through an Iraqi government spokesman that Hussein will only face 12 charges of a possible 500. The trial is scheduled to begin in two months.

A spokesman said the 12 charges of crimes against humanity were fully documented and there was no point "wasting time" dealing with all 500.

"Wasting time". I understand how courts work and that it is sometimes necessary to try a defendant on specific charges that seem most likely to garner a conviction, however, I feel the choice of words "wasting time" is extremely unfortunate and is a slap in the face to his many victims. Surely, the spokesperson could have been more sensitive.

UPDATE: Daily Kos Diary Series Compilation

Thu Jun 02, 2005 at 11:37:07 AM PDT

Note: I originally posted this diary on March 16, 2005. My purpose in reposting it today is to 1) make any additions or corrections to the list and 2) inform new kossacks about dKos diary series. I've successfully managed to procrastinate to this point when it comes to turning this into a dKosopedia entry, but it's time to bite the bullet, learn the wiki formatting and get that job done. - catnip

Whether you're new to Daily Kos or have been around for a little while, you may have missed some diaries by dedicated kossacks who have devoted themselves to presenting regularly scheduled diary series. Since I think they deserve some recognition and more support, I've compiled a list for your reading pleasure.

Without further delay, here they are. (The links provided go to the diarist's list of diaries so you can follow them on a regular basis.)

If I Hear Freedom is on the March One More Time...

Mon May 30, 2005 at 09:38:42 AM PDT

Freedom is on the march?

Where, exactly?

On the march?

On the crawl is more like it.

And, why does freedom have to march?

Is that the best we can do in this world?

The Attempted Dobsonization of Canada

Fri May 27, 2005 at 11:49:12 AM PDT

Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, ran a story today - which I urge you to read - about the move by Dobson's group, Focus on the Family, to gain seats in Canada's federal parliament. This news comes amidst reports that Canadians actually fear Conservative leader Stephen Harper's agenda.

SC's David Wilkins New US Ambassador to Canada

Fri May 27, 2005 at 09:52:36 AM PDT

On Thursday night, South Carolina's Speaker, David Wilkins, was confirmed by the US senate as the new US ambassador to Canada.

David who?

Following on the heels of 4 years of punishment Canadians suffered at the hands and mouth of former ambassador Paul Cellucci, we were hoping for a kindler, gentler US representative. Cellucci was a no-holds barred ambassador and he ruffled many Canadian feathers during his term here as he tried to bully Canada at almost every turn. Canadians don't like being bullied and we were quite happy to send him packing.

Bolton Debate Day 1 - Part 5

Wed May 25, 2005 at 02:58:53 PM PDT

The Senate is currently debating the nomination of John Bolton as US Ambassador to the UN. The vote is set for Thursday, May 26, 2005.

Update [2005-5-25 19:13:5 by catnip]: Cloture vote 6pm ET, Thursday, May 26th.

To this point, we have heard from Lugar(R), Biden(D), Warner(R) and Voinovich(R). Voinovich spoke out against Bolton's nomination and choked up at the end because he's very concerned about America's future. It was very touching.

We've also heard from Rockefeller(D) and Dodd(D). Rockefeller slammed the administration for not providing unredacted documentation on the NSA intercepts (background here). As a result, Dodd made a veiled filibuster threat if the information was not forthcoming to the chairmen of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before the time of the vote on Thursday.

Update [2005-5-25 19:40:3 by catnip]: Reuters article about Voinovich and the possible filibuster.

Roberts(R) is now vigorously speaking against the requirement that this information be brought forward prior to the vote.
